Welcome to Furnace Creek, California– located in the heart of Death Valley. This place holds
the record for the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth—134° Fahrenheit Or 56.7°
Celsius back in 1913. Let that sink in!
Now, you might think, ‘How do people even survive here?’ Well, locals keep cool with air
conditioning, tons of water, and lots of shade!
But what makes Furnace Creek so darn hot? It’s the combination of low elevation, dry air, and
intense sunlight. It sits smack dab in Death Valley, the lowest point in North America, at 282 feet
below sea level. The surrounding mountains block any cool air from moving in, and the dry air
means no clouds for shade.
It is also home to some of the hottest summer nights on Earth. Temperatures can stay above
100°F (37.8°C) even at midnight!
