The SMVRR is a shortline in its namesake city, operating on 14 miles of track from Santa Maria through rural Betteravia into the small town of Guadalupe. This railroad serves several industries in town and has several sidings and spurs for railcar storage, and interchanges with UP at their Guadalupe yard a few times a week. The operation uses an eclectic selection of motive power, featuring an EMD GP9, an EMD GP39, a couple of GE ton switchers, and an ex-Fillmore & Western GP35. FWRY 3501, the GP35 which starred in notable Hollywood movies, serves as power for the run, sporting a nice Nathan P3 horn and GE mechanical bell.
We begin on the west side of Santa Maria as the local switches a cut of tank cars at one of the storage sidings. It then pulls forward and shoves into the Betteravia storage tracks for more switching, before making its run to the UP Guadalupe Yard for interchange.
As the train switches Guadalupe Yard, Amtrak Coast Starlight 14 passes by. With its inbound cut of cars blocked, the train heads back to Santa Maria, switching a hopper industry by the SMV yard office before tying the locomotive down for the afternoon. Thanks for watching!
