The sit-in programmes organised by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and like-minded political organisations at different entry points in Dhaka concluded on Saturday amid a series of clashes and arrests.
Both the police and BNP leaders confirmed that several BNP leaders and activists, including Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a member of the party's standing committee, and Amanullah Aman, a central leader, were detained during the sit-in programmes.
The confrontations also resulted in injuries to many opposition activists.
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy was later released by the police.
Tensions escalated at various locations as the police and supporters of the ruling Awami League, sometimes with the backing of the police, clashed with BNP leaders and activists who had gathered for the sit-in, leading to disruptions at multiple entry-exit points in Dhaka.
Incidents of clashes were reported in several areas, including Gabtali, Aminbazar, Siddhirganj, Signboard, the southern end of Buriganga Bridge, Keraniganj, and Uttara.
