Unfortunately I didn’t film the building of my van bed, but before you swipe away, let me tell you what makes mine unique!
First of all, it was super cheap! Whilst building supplies have gone up in price sharply post-pandemic, I made the entire bed out of eight 2.4m lengths of 38x63mm timber, at £2.50 each, bringing the total cost of the wood to around £20.
But that’s not all - I had very specific requirements when designing the bed. A lot of van beds pull out from a bench format and have one moving section. But I wanted to make sure I could still fit my 9 foot 5 inch surfboard in the van which meant keeping the centre clear.
So, I devised a 3 section pullout bench/bed which, when pushed in, created a narrow bench, but when pulled out fills the entire width of the van, creating a very comfortable king size bed.
It’s firmly held in place in the van with two turnbuckles that connect into the van’s load rings and is topped by three mattresses, each custom and handmade out of extra firm foam sheets and some bed sheets.
To maximise the functionality of the bed, I created a solid drawer underneath, which I segmented up to store all of the items we use for making a brew and cooking in the van, and two other storage boxes which have proved super useful for all sorts of things.
