Johanna Hård: Born Johanna Jungberg in 1789 in Gothenburg, Sweden, she married Fredrik Hård in 1813 and settled on Vrångö Island. After her husband's death in 1817, Johanna faced financial hardships and was suspected of smuggling. In 1823, she was accused of orchestrating the attack on the Danish ship Frau Mette, whose crew was found murdered and the vessel plundered. While her alleged accomplices were executed, insufficient evidence led to her acquittal. She later moved to Stockholm, where she lived until her death in 1851. Johanna is often remembered as Sweden's last pirate.

Lyrics:

Oh, I was born on Hisingen’s land
A farmer’s child with a calloused hand
But the waves they whispered, wild and free
And their song was stronger than the soil to me
I wed a man, Fredrik was his name
But the earth still bound me, it burned like shame
When widowhood came, I turned to the sea
Where the salt and the storm made a rogue of me

Yo ho, Johanna, your cunning guides our oar
Sailing shadows from Copenhagen’s shore
Smuggler and schemer, your name’s untamed
Johanna Hård, the last pirate claimed.

To Copenhagen’s docks I steered my craft
With cloth in my hold and a sailor’s craft
The customs men—they could snarl and bark
But they’d never catch me in the dark
When famine pressed and the silver was spent
I welcomed the whispers that the devil sent
A Danish ship, Frau Mette, rode low
And the sea turned red where the tide did flow

Yo ho, Johanna, your cunning guides our oar
Sailing shadows from Copenhagen’s shore
Smuggler and schemer, your name’s untamed
Johanna Hård, the last pirate claimed

The gavel fell, they chained me tight
But I swore I’d done no killing that night
"Not I!" I cried, "No blood on my hand
Though plans were made upon my land."
A letter I wrote, a plea to the court
They called it madness, my last resort
Three heads rolled, but I stayed free
For the sea still had plans for me

Yo ho, Johanna, your cunning guides our oar
Sailing shadows from Copenhagen’s shore
Smuggler and schemer, your name’s untamed
Johanna Hård, the last pirate claimed.

To Stockholm I fled, my past I hid
The captain’s widow, my tales forbid
But the sea’s a lover you can’t outrun
Its salt in my veins, its song never done
They called me honest, a post I held
But in dreams, the sea and I still rebelled
Though I passed in a quiet, shadowed hall
My legend will echo in the squall

Yo ho, Johanna, the sea’s your faithful lore
Sailing shadows from Copenhagen’s shore
Smuggler and schemer, your name’s untamed
Johanna Hård, the last pirate claimed!
