Welcome to the Yanggakdo International Hotel, North Korea’s largest operating hotel and one of the few places foreigners are allowed to stay. As you can see from the image, this hotel is as grand as it is mysterious. The golden “Yanggakdo International Hotel” sign on the marble wall reflects its status as the main tourist hub in Pyongyang. To the right, you can see a glass elevator, giving visitors a view of the luxurious lobby as they ascend to their rooms.
At first glance, this hotel seems to have everything a tourist could need—restaurants, a bowling alley, a casino, and even limited internet access (for a steep price of $3 per 10 minutes!). However, there is one place guests can never go: the mysterious "5th floor."
This forbidden floor is rumored to be a surveillance and security area, possibly used to monitor tourists. It gained international attention when an American tourist, Otto Warmbier, was caught attempting to steal a propaganda poster from this floor. He was arrested and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor—a shocking punishment that sparked international outrage. Tragically, he was returned to the U.S. in a coma and passed away shortly after.
This is just one of many secrets hidden within the Yanggakdo Hotel. What else might be behind those locked doors? Watch the video to find out.
