Danny slumped against the record store counter, watching another customer flip through the disco section. The relentless thump of "Dancing Queen" echoed from the speakers, and he felt his soul dying a little more with each repetition.
"Same old garbage," he muttered, straightening a stack of Bee Gees albums. Three years of mirror ball madness had turned every radio station into a synthetic wasteland. The four-on-the-floor beat had become musical quicksand.
Then Tony walked in, denim jacket covered in patches, carrying two vinyl records that made Danny's heart skip.
"You heard this yet?" Tony asked, sliding "The Wall" across the counter. "Pink Floyd just dropped this monster. And Journey's new one—'Infinity'—is pure fire."
Danny's eyes widened as he studied the stark brick wall artwork. He'd been waiting for something, anything, to break disco's stranglehold on rock radio.
"Let me spin this," he said, lifting the needle off the Gloria Gaynor track with visible relief.
The opening helicopter sounds of "In the Flesh?" filled the store, followed by Roger Waters' haunting vocals. This was rock with substance, with story, with power that disco could never touch.
"There's more coming," Tony said, pulling out a 38 Special album. "These guys are bringing Southern rock back hard. Real guitars, real drums, real attitude."
Danny felt something stir that he hadn't felt since Led Zeppelin IV. Music with weight, with meaning, with soaring guitar solos that made his chest tight with emotion.
"Thank God," he whispered, watching the disco customers drift away, overwhelmed by the raw power bleeding through the speakers.
Rock was fighting back, one power chord at a time.
