This is incredible: What you’re watching is the embryo of a fruit fly while it’s developing. Scientists are using it to unlock secrets about human disease. Here’s what’s happening...Right now it’s going through waves of nuclei divisions from back to front. Then each nucleus becomes a cell, and the cells communicate and organize themselves while continuing to divide. But along the way, this process will get disrupted in normal embryos, in ways that can also happen unexpectedly in adult mammals (like us!) and lead to disease. So visualizing how cells work together and understanding what happens when things go wrong is helping scientists treat human diseases better.
