Roxy Striar & Tara Erickson dive into the suspenseful world of slasher cinema with a Reaction & Review of John Carpenter’s iconic 1978 horror classic, Halloween! This genre-defining film introduced audiences to Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut, later known for True Lies and Knives Out), a quiet Haddonfield teen whose Halloween night turns into a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse when she becomes the target of a masked killer. Michael Myers, the silent and relentless embodiment of evil, escapes from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium and returns to his hometown to stalk new victims—launching one of horror’s most chilling franchises.
The film also stars Donald Pleasence (The Great Escape, You Only Live Twice) as Dr. Sam Loomis, the psychiatrist determined to stop Michael before he kills again, and Nancy Kyes (The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13) as Laurie’s friend Annie. With its minimalist score (composed by Carpenter himself), stark cinematography, and brilliant use of suspense and silence, Halloween set the standard for slasher films to come.
