That's a beaver lodge! Beavers are brilliant engineers, and the Denali Highway is one of the best places I've ever seen to witness their amazing work. They strategically build dams to block the flow of water, creating calm beaver ponds like the one you see here. That big mound in the center is their home, the beaver lodge, where the entire family lives, safe from predators.
The entrance to the lodge is actually underwater, which is why they create the pond in the first place. It’s an incredible feat of natural architecture and a crucial part of the Alaskan ecosystem. The Denali Highway has more beaver ponds and lodges than anywhere I've ever been in one spot. It's truly amazing stuff!
This is just one of the incredible wildlife sightings from our full journey exploring the Denali Highway. Be sure to SUBSCRIBE to Living My Alaska for the complete series and more amazing Alaskan adventures!
