Ron DeSantis Removes Rainbow Pulse Nightclub Memorial #shorts #pulse #lgbtq Florida officials have painted over the rainbow crosswalk outside the Pulse nightclub memorial in Orlando, a tribute to the 49 lives lost in the 2016 mass shooting.
The overnight removal was carried out by the state’s Department of Transportation under Gov. Ron DeSantis. Orlando’s mayor condemned the move as a “cruel political act,” while out state senator Carlos Guillermo Smith called it “a disgusting act of betrayal.”
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer shared his feelings in statement: “We are devastated to learn that overnight the state painted over the Pulse Memorial crosswalk on Orange Avenue. This callous action of hastily removing part of a memorial to what was at the time our nation’s largest mass shooting, without any supporting safety data, or discussion is a cruel political act,”
The crosswalk had been both a symbol of remembrance and a planned feature of the future permanent Pulse memorial, which recently received state funding. Its erasure is the latest in DeSantis’ campaign against LGBTQ+ visibility in Florida’s public spaces.
