I learned "Buffalo" from recordings of Elizabeth Cotten and Dink Roberts; both of North Carolina. Cotten and Roberts knew the song as "Buffalo," although Roberts' version has been erroneously titled "Roustabout." He seems to have adopted that title from white folklorists; along with the term "clawhammer," which wasn't widely used in the South before 1965.
It's worth noting that John Smith reported seeing bison (wild buffaloes) on the banks of the Potomac River in 1612. The last eastern bison were eradicated in Tennessee and western Virginia during the 1820s.
Banjo tuned eAEG♯B (A=432 hz).
