Ever wondered why there are two Washington in the United States? Let’s clear up the
confusion.
This Washington is called Washington D.C., and D.C stands for district of columbia. It is the
nation’s capital, and was named after George Washington in 1791. But it’s not a state—it’s a
federal district, created to avoid any state having too much power over the government.
Meanwhile, on the opposite coast, Washington state was originally part of the Oregon Territory.
When it became its own territory in 1853, settlers wanted to name it Columbia, after the
Columbia River. But Congress rejected it—too similar to the District of Columbia!
So, they went with Washington instead, honoring the first president. And that’s how we ended
up with two Washingtons!
