Steps on how to properly plant and care for your new tree:
1. Refill the hole with the soil you just removed. If the soil is lum, break it up a little before placing it back in the hole. Be sure to pack it down to get rid of any air pockets and add water as you backfill.
2. Add 2-3 inches of organic mulch to help your tree retain moisture, control soil temperature and weeds, and prevent damage from lawn equipment.
*tip* don't add too much or pile it on the trunk, this is sometimes called "volcano mulching" and creates a cool, damp environment that can attract fungi, pests and diseases
3. For the first two weeks, deeply water young trees every day. Then water a new tree once a week for the first year, while it still has its leaves. Be sure to take into account rainfall before watering.
4. Try to hold off on extensive pruning of young trees for at least a year.
