Celia Cruz & Oscar D'Leon - Full Concert [HD] | Live at North Sea Jazz Festival 2000

Date & Venue: SATURDAY 15 JULY 2000 • STATENHAL • Congress Centre, The Hague The Netherlands

Ursula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso (October 21, 1925, Havana – July 16, 2003, Fort Lee, New Jersey), commonly known as Celia Cruz, was a Cuban-American singer. She became known as the Queen of Salsa. She was born in the Cuban capital Havana where her musical career began in her childhood, when she sang on street corners. In 1950, Cruz replaced the singer of the band La Sonora Matancera. This was her big break as she became one of Cuba's biggest stars. After Fidel Castro's seizure of power in 1959, La Sonora Matancera left for a planned tour of Mexico. However, instead of returning to Cuba, the band fled to the United States.
Cruz was granted citizenship in 1961 and refused to return to her homeland while the communists were in power there. In 1962, she married the band's trumpeter, Pedro Knight, who would later become her manager and a central figure in her music, inspiring countless songs, testifying to a happy marriage. Two days before her death, the couple celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary and Knight was by her side when she died.
Cruz's influence extended far beyond the stage and recording studio. Her style and creativity made her an ambassador of Latino culture, especially in the United States. In a career spanning more than fifty years, during which she released more than seventy albums and appeared in ten films, she achieved the highest honors, including five Grammy Awards and two Latin Grammys. She has also been honored with awards outside the music world, including honorary doctorates from Yale University, Florida International University and Miami University, a National Medal of Arts, the highest honor for an artist in the United States and a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Streets in New York, Mexico, Costa Rica and Miami, Florida are named after her. Musically, she collaborated extensively with percussionist Tito Puente.

Óscar Emilio León Simosa (born July 11, 1943), known as Oscar D'León, and affectionately called The Pharaoh of Salsa, The Lion of Salsa, and the World's Sonero, is a Venezuelan musician and bassist best known for his salsa music. He is the author of "Llorarás", which he recorded in 1974 with his group, Dimensión Latina. He is also an ambassador for Operation Smile.
