Back to School in the USSR - Rare Footage of Soviet Children Starting New School Year (1973)

On 2 September 1973, ITN's Robert Southgate reported from Moscow as children of the Soviet Union returned to school. New pupils brought flowers for the staff and took part in a grand assembly outside, where they were greeted by the school's director. Flags of the Young Pioneers (the USSR's compulsory youth organisation) and Komsomol (the Communist youth movement) were then paraded, before the new arrivals were taken inside by older members of the school.
