The Secret Service didn’t always just protect the US government's top brass. In fact, at their founding, protective missions weren’t within their scope at all.
But a great American tragedy, a couple less-than-legal operations, and some good old fashioned desperation would change that.

Fast forward to today, and the United States Secret Service is clearly in need of reform, with multiple examples of glaring operational holes and inappropriate agent behavior in recent years. The scandals seem to keep stacking up, and accusations of political extremism continue to mount.
Their responsibilities require them to remain apolitical, but that doesn't seem to be holding up all too well.
