Anohana...what a show.

I guess this is the first video that I’m posting after my short hiatus, and it’s somewhat fitting because it continues the little series I started in February with Dear Love: .

For those of you who haven’t seen it, I’m slowly arranging a whole bunch of Anohana OSTs (in somewhat order of emotional impact for me) and culminating them with arrangements of the OP and ED. Each OST is so delicate and beautiful, and I think they deserve more recognition than they currently get (because they’re so overshadowed by Secret Base, which makes sense).

I Left You Last definitely has a different feel from Dear Love; Dear Love feels much more peaceful and tranquil, but I Left You Last feels more tinged with sadness. The color is slightly darker, mournful, and yearning, yet doesn’t dip entirely into that realm as with other tracks. I suppose that’s what drew me to it in the first place and encouraged me to arrange it.

The arrangement was relatively straightforward given the strong presence of the piano in the original. The difficulty was incorporating some of the string elements, but I think I ended up just incorporating them more into the playing itself.

I recorded this in early January, and the difficulty with playing such a delicate piece like this was working the micro layers between mezzo-piano and piano, piano and pianissimo while keeping the pedal thin yet lush enough to carry some of the presence that the strings originally provided.

And of course, technicality aside, it was an emotional piece with a story that I genuinely wanted to tell from a show that I love. I guess that’s what makes it a fitting piece to return on: it again reminds me of why I started this channel and how I want to connect with all of you through music, even if it is a shorter, simpler piece because ultimately that’s what this is all about.
