The escape of Ante Pavelić:
Spain was pro-Axis, yet neutral in WW2. Via the so-called ratlines organized by the Vatican thousands of war criminals and former Nazis made their way to Spain when WW2 was over. And as the saying goes: not all Germans were Nazis and not all Nazis were German.
Belgian Nazi collaborator Léon Degrelle for example. He was the frontrunner of Belgium's fascist party Rex and one if the main collaborators in Belgium during WW2. He firmly held on to his beliefs and died in 1994 at the age of 87.
Ante Pavelić, the Croatian dictator, who oversaw the extermination of Serbs, Jews and Roma in his Independent State of Croatia, a Nazi puppet state. He first made his way to Argentina and later to Spain where he passed away in 1959.
Croatian Vjekoslav Luburić who ran the infamous Jasenovac death camp in WW2 Yugoslavia. He was known for his sadism and brutal treatment of inmates of Jasenovac. He was assassinated in 1969.
