In early 1970, I was sixteen years old and I went to Miami with my parents, where every evening I made a special effort to tape the soul radio stations there, particularly WCKO, which was always the best, with its legendary DJ, Gary The Master Blaster. It's very important to understand and remember the context - this was a staggering 52 year ago. Those little cassette tapes were priceless. Gary ended one particular show by talking over Isaac Hayes "Cafe Reggios". My best friend Les Cokell swooned over this, as it led into King Pleasure, the forerunner of the music which we all love. Gary is long dead now. So we recorded a brand new version of Isaac Hayes' "Cafe Regio's", which was recorded in 1998 and then overlaid with an original 1970 radio rap from Gary The Master Blaster - the legendary radio D.J. from Miami radio station WCKO who established a huge local audience as a result of his organic early radio 'raps' which were typical of the personality DJ's on U.S. black music stations in the early 1970's. An incredibly talented sound expert, Mark Ayres, separated Gary's rap from the Isaac Hayes music, enabling us to record our own version of it. 52 years since Gary recorded his immortal old school rap, and it sounds better than ever. I hope his spirit is smiling down upon us.
