The Health and Human Service Office of the Inspector General Spring 2025 semi-annual report was issued recently covering activities from October 1st, 2024 to March 31st, 2025. It may not get a lot of flash, but it's an extremely important organization within the government. The Office of the Inspector General follows clearly defined accountability standards to provide independent oversight and actual recommendations to members of Congress. According to the report, the Office of the Inspector General returns $11 in recovery for every $1 invested, accounting for a $16.61 billion total monetary impact. In that same six months 1,503 individuals and entities were excluded from federally funded healthcare programs for a variety of reasons, including conviction for Medicaid or Medicare fraud. They have led to 298 criminal information indictments as well as 395 civil actions. When Inspector General reports may not sound exciting, the results speak for themselves. As some illustrations, Faith Newton 56 of Massachusetts was ordered to 12 years of prison and a hundred million dollars, again, a hundred million dollars in restitution for committing healthcare fraud and money laundering.
Newton siphoned over a hundred million dollars from a program designed to support vulnerable residents. She used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle. She did this by billing for services never rendered and paying kickbacks for patient referrals, regardless of medical necessity. She would also flood clinics with plans of care that were not medically necessary. Jose Goyos 38 of Florida was sentenced to 15 years in prison for billing over $67 million for medically unnecessary genetic testing through a call center. Dr. Daniel R. Canchola 54 of Texas was sentenced to 10 years in prison, as well as ordered to pay $34 million in restitution for his role in a scheme to defraud Medicare by prescribing durable medical equipment and cancer genetic testing without seeing, speaking to, or otherwise treating patients. In addition to these examples, OIG administers grants that provide federal funding to Medicaid fraud control units to fight Medicaid fraud and protect nursing home patients from abuse. In the fiscal year 2024 MFCU work resulted in 1,151 convictions and $1.4 billion in recovered assets. Despite their success, the agency is under attack. The Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services was fired early in the Trump presidency. As of this report, there's only an acting Inspector General. The former head Inspector General Christi Grimm was one of 17 Inspector Generals fired by Trump early in his term in January without explanation or notice to Congress.
Grimm had previously had an altercation with Trump during his first presidency. Then she issued a report citing shortages of COVID-19 testing supplies and medical personnel, protective equipment. This report prompted Trump to nominate a replacement for Grimm while she continued to serve as a role in the department. In 2021, president Joe Biden nominated Grimm to serve as permanent Inspector General. She was confirmed and served from February, 2022 to her unprompted firing in late January, 2025. Unfortunately, this seems it is yet another example of Trump's hatred of accountability, no matter how oblique.
