New York Toccata is a jazz-fusion album by Argentine/American composer and pianist Carlos Franzetti, issued in 1985 on Verve Records. Recorded in 1984 at Blank Tapes Studios in New York, it continues Franzetti’s exploration of electric-acoustic textures following his earlier album Prometheus.
A sophisticated fusion of Latin-influenced rhythms, classical motifs, and straight-ahead jazz improvisation, the album is filed under Fusion and Latin Jazz.
A fusion music blog notes the opening track “Arabesque", highlighting Joe Beck’s guitar interplay with D’Rivera’s saxophone. The title track “New York Toccata” (piano solo) showcases Franzetti’s blend of classical toccata form with modern jazz phrasing, a hallmark of his writing style.
This release bridges his early electric-jazz period (Galaxy Dust, 1979) and later orchestral projects, making it a pivotal point in his discography.
The core lineup includes:
Carlos Franzetti – keyboards, vocals
Joe Beck – acoustic guitar
Paquito D’Rivera – alto saxophone
Marc Johnson – double bass
Anthony Jackson – six-string electric bass
Drums: Ignacio Berroa (tracks A3, B1) and Randy Jones (tracks A1, A2, B3)
