First, the surgeon administers local anesthesia to numb the area. An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the affected bone site. A small block of bone is then harvested, usually from the patient’s chin or the back of the jaw. This autogenous bone block is carefully shaped to fit the recipient site.
The bone block is secured in place using small titanium screws, and any gaps around the graft are filled with particulate bone graft material. A protective membrane is placed over the graft to promote healing and prevent soft tissue ingrowth.
Over the following months, the grafted bone integrates with the existing jawbone. Once the site has fully healed, it becomes suitable for an implant.
