1836 - 1970 Military Barracks and the Navy "Bådsmandsstræde Kaserne"
"1971 "Christiania" occupied the area, and is still here.

Bådsmandsstrædes Barracks or Prinsessegades Barracks was a barracks from 1836 in Bådmandsstræde on Christianshavn.

The barracks' 34-hectare area is partly bounded by Christianshavn ramparts (Nyværk). Bådsmandsstrædes Barracks housed the King's Artillery Regiment and the Army Materiel Command's Recruit School, the Ammunition Arsenal and, for a shorter period, the Lifeguard's guard company. In the surrounding neighborhood there are several military facilities, i.a. an ammunition arsenal. Like the barracks, they have not been in military use since 1968.

"In the area there were already military buildings in the form of gunpowder houses on Christianshavns Vold /"Rampart" from the 17th and 18th centuries. The first building to be erected on the barracks grounds itself was the long barracks building itself (1835-37) in classicist style that still exists, now called the "Ark of Peace". Only half of the planned building was built and the building was never completed and is asymmetrical.

Among the oldest buildings are (the 1830s a hay store, possibly by engineer lieutenant Nickolin, now the "Opera" The Green Hall (riding hall from 1847, listed) and the , now the Dandelion, reminiscent of the Spartan architecture in the Danish West Indies (1845- 47, listed.) In addition there is the Gray Hall (1853, moved from Holck's Bastion at Vestervold, rebuilt 1891, listed) and the three wooden warehouse buildings ("Laden, loen og gristeien") built during the Schleswig wars 1852–53 and moved from Fredericia Voldterræn to the State Government Laboratory 1878-1886.

The artillery magazine at Prinsessegade (now "Loppen", listed) dates from 1863 and was designed by J.H. Nebelong in round arch style. The main warehouse of the State Agency's Laboratory, now the "Multihuset" (1871 by engineer captain Petersen, listed) is also in the round arch style, which also applies to the cluster of factory buildings (Fabrikken "The Factory", Månefiskeren "The Moon Fisher" and Bade- og Sandhedshuset "The Bath and the Health House") nearby. The facility consists of a workshop building for the laboratory, boiler and machine house built in 1887 according to drawings by A. Kohl. The workshop building has been raised from 2 to 3 floors. Løvehuset "The Lion House" nearby was originally officers' quarters and was built in 1891 in red stone in contrast to the yellow stone buildings that characterize the old barracks.

The area, which is now called "Mælkevejen / The Milky Way" (1886-87), consists of 6 originally identical two-storey barracks buildings with sheds at the top and stables at the bottom. Similarly, "Psyak" is a series of barracks, also arranged in a grid pattern. Both building groups are today extensively remodeled.

The barracks ceased to be manned barracks in 1970, and the buildings were occupied in the summer of 1971, and the area has since September 1971 been known as "Fristaden Christiania / Free Town Christiania"

Large parts of the old buildings, i.a. "Den Grå Hal / The Grey Hall" and "Den Grønne Hal / The Green Hall" are intact and have been given conservation status. Some buildings were already protected in 1974, including "Loppen / The Flee", but the Christiania Act of 1989 revoked the validity of both the building and landscape conservation laws for the protected area. With the Christiania Normalization Act of 2003, the laws were again put into effect, and in 2007 and 2008 14 buildings were listed."
