Dr. Zahid Hussain, the former lead economist of the World Bank’s Dhaka office, has expressed disappointment with the fiscal and macro policies that have led to a decline in economic growth and contributed to rising inflation. In an interview with the New Age Business magazine, the senior economist also emphasised the concerning issue of growing inequality in the country. He attributed the runaway income inequality to a labour-unfriendly industrial policy and shared these thoughts during the conversation with New Age Special Correspondent Shakhawat Hossain.
Zahid Hussain, one of the country’s leading economists, expressed doubt regarding the ambitious growth target set by the present government for its fifth and final year of the third consecutive tenure.
Despite experiencing a decrease in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth to 6.03 per cent during the recently concluded fiscal year 2023, down from 7.1 per cent in FY22, the government remains optimistic, aiming to achieve a 7.5 per cent growth in the current fiscal year 2024.
