Born in 1938 in Lancaster, South Carolina, Maurice Williams began his music career by performing in church from the age of 6. Along with his childhood friend Earl Gainey, Williams formed a gospel group called the 'Junior Harmonizers' and as their interest shifted towards Doo-Wop music, they changed their name to the Royal Charms. After graduating from high school, while performing with the band, their station wagon broke down. The band came across a car named Zodiac and decided to change their name accordingly.

'Stay' is a song that Maurice Williams composed at the age of 15 in 1953 and was released in 1960. In this song, Williams sang lead vocals while Henry Gaston(1937 - 2015) provided the falsetto chorus.
The original recording of 'Stay' was the shortest single ever to reach No.1 on the American charts at that time, with a total length of 1 minute and 36 seconds.
By 1990, the song had sold over 8 million copies, and it regained popularity when it was included in the soundtrack of 'Dirty Dancing.'
Numerous artists have covered the song, including The Hollies, The Four Seasons, and Jackson Browne.

Maurice Williams (1938 - 2024) continued to record, tour, and release music until his death in 2024. He was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2010.
