On 19 October 1982, former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan delivered the first Carlton Lecture at the Conservative Party's Carlton Club in London. In a lecture titled "Civilisation Under Threat", the 88-year-old Macmillan presented a grand, sweeping account of the history of the world, and the comparitively young phenomenon of "human civilisation". He reflected on how "Western civilisation" had changed in his own lifetime, recalling his memories of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, the outbreak of the First World War, the tubulent interwar years and the Second World War, and his own time as Prime Minister.
