Most mothers tidying their teenage child's bedroom fear they might find something illicit. Takahara Suiko’s mum found a ukulele. The Malaysian artist, who now records as The Venopian Solitude, was never allowed piano lessons, but whether on her father’s Samsung phone, a toy xylophone, a toilet roll, or that hidden ukulele, she always found ways to make music. The first Malaysian musician ever to join the Red Bull Music Academy, Takahara is as prolific as she is unconventional. Channelling the raw DIY charm of Kimya Dawson and Regina Spektor, she has recorded hundreds of songs on YouTube and Bandcamp.
