It’s usually said of potatoes that they need to grow in loose soil and won’t grow well in compacted dirt. So the main worry for people thinking about converting to growing using the No Dig method is usually: but what about potatoes?
Definitely my Irish plot neighbour Old Tom would say that it’s impossible to grow potatoes this way 😆
But it absolutely works fine, and for the minimal effort put it I think I would be happy with a little less yield too.
I would say though, that your first year of growing potatoes in no dig beds that were created on lawn or turf, with only a thin layer of compost/mulch, you would see a smaller crop your first season.
But if you are converting existing vegetable beds to no dig, I would bet you would see no difference! Controversial?
Anyway, potatoes is also one of them veg where people question why you grow your own when it takes up a lot of space and are cheap in the shop. Well, as always it comes down to flavour and nutritional benefits! As well as the sense of achievement 💪
Saying that though, I don’t grow potatoes to supply us all year. It’s not part of my succession plan for a few reasons:
A. I don’t have the storage space in my house
B. I want to grow lots of other things
C. I’m super happy just to supplement our diet with them when they are at their best 👌
Let me know what you think!
