One-third of France’s territory has a surprisingly low population density, forming a diagonal corridor nearly 1,000 kilometers long. While France’s average population density is 120 people per square kilometer, this region has just 30. The biggest city in this area is Clermont-Ferrand, with about 141,000 residents. Two main reasons explain this: urbanization has drawn people to major cities like Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, and most people prefer living near coastlines. Since this diagonal lacks sea access (except near Spain), it remains sparsely populated.
