I’m aaskeew, and this is House Through Time—a series exploring the roots and evolution of house music from Chicago’s underground dance floors to its global impact today. In the early ’80s, amid the aftermath of the infamous Disco Demolition and a segregated cityscape, Black and LGBTQ+ communities in Chicago forged a new sonic identity in clubs like The Warehouse. Pioneering DJs such as Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy spliced disco, funk, and soul with drum machines (think Roland’s TR-808, TR-909, and TB-303) to craft the pumping four-on-the-floor beats that became “house.”

From that raw DIY spirit emerged music that was radically inclusive, unifying dancers of all backgrounds under strobe lights and a shared pulse. This set is more than a mix—it’s a deep dive into the anthems, edits, and rhythmic innovations that shaped Chicago house into a worldwide force.
