The headless horseman has been galloping through European legends since the Middle Ages. In Ireland, the headless horseman is called Dullahan, while in German folklore the mythical figure is known as a nameless revenant.
The headless horseman gained literary fame through the novella by the American writer Washington Irving "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Like in Tim Burton's film, the Headless Horseman appears as the ghost of a German mercenary.
