Penguins, also known as penguins (order Sphenisciformes, family Spheniscidae - taken from the genus Spheniscus meaning wedge-shaped) are a group of flightless water birds. They live almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, with only one species, the Galápagos penguin, found north of the equator. Well-adapted for life in water, penguins have contrasting plumage of light and dark markings and flippers for swimming. Most penguins eat krill, fish, squid and other forms of marine life that they catch while swimming underwater. They spend about half of their lives on land and the other half in the sea.Although almost all penguin species are native to the Southern Hemisphere, they are not only found in cold climates, such as Antarctica. In fact, only a few penguin species live this far south. Several species are found in temperate regions, but one species, the Galápagos penguin, lives near the equator.
