It’s time to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In this show, we break down songs, albums or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long-term success. On today’s episode we are going to talk about a song that took a beloved indie band from the underground to the top of the mainstream but even though you’ve heard the song many times, I know you haven’t heard the incredible details of how this heartwrenching song came into existence. Stick around it’s a great story today. we’re featuring With or Without You from U2’s 1987 album The Joshua Tree.
Formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1976, U2 consists of Paul Hewson (better known as Bono) on lead vocals and guitar, Adam Clayton on bass, Larry Mullen Jr. on drums, and David Evans “The Edge” on lead guitar. The band released their first LP ‘Boy’ on October 20, 1980, featuring the single I Will Follow. And after setting out on their first major US tour in 1981, Boy reached a respectable #63 on the Billboard 200. As it was, I Will Follow was a no-show on the Hot 100, but it did hit #20 on the newly established US Rock charts.
A year after Boy in October 1981, U2 issued their appropriately named follow-up album ‘October.’ However, this one stalled at a disappointing #104 on the US Charts. The record’s lead single ‘Fire’ once again failed to breach the Hot 100. That being said, U2 was on the rise here in America in a whole other space… the underground. Although U2 hailed from outside America, throughout the early and mid-80s they received consistent airplay across US college radio stations… along with other trans-Atlantic acts like The Smiths, The Cure, and Echo and the Bunnymen. Stateside, College Rock was the precursor to the Alternative genre label, and was fueled by college scenes like ‘Athens, Georgia’ and ‘Minneapolis,’ which spawned acts like R.E.M and The Replacements.
Once again, U2’s 3rd album ‘War,’ wasn’t a mainstream breakthrough in the US.
