In a clever application of physics and engineering, technicians have found an efficient way to repair high-pressure water pipes - by freezing them. Using liquid nitrogen, which boils at –196°C, they rapidly cool a section of the pipe, causing the water inside to freeze solid. This frozen mass temporarily blocks the flow of water, effectively acting as a valve without the need for mechanical shutoff systems. The method allows workers to isolate and repair sections of pipeline without depressurising the entire system or risking dangerous water spray. Once the repair is complete, the ice naturally melts and normal flow resumes, making this a smart, non-invasive solution for pipe maintenance in complex systems.
