Group of Santa Barbara ( CA ), established in the fall of 1966. The group had 3 brothers Orosco: Ernie, Raymond and Ruben, and 2 brothers Fricia: Dennis and Kenny. First year played at dances and clubs and loved the owner of one of the clubs - Johnny Fairchild, who helped them to release three singles in 1967 on a small local firm . In 1968, after the success of local singles already solid company "UNI" released their debut album . They played quite a strange mix of psychedelia , soul and pop-rock with unexpected things almost hard rock , such as "Hot Line Conversation" ...Super duper fun commercial psych that's right on the edge of bubblegum. The horn section on many of the songs has a uniquely detuned bite to it that really gets me. And the mellotron on the final track (in an American recording? this early on?) comes in heavy on the choral sample. Exceeded my expectations, in spite of that dated intense vibrato that these macho U.S. rock frontmen all had from roughly '67 to '77.
An often off the radar, also-ran band from the era, with a good period sound and few scattered decent tracks, but overall a bit underwhelming. However, I did fork out for the original vinyl and I've rated it a bit higher than I typically would solely for "Groovy Towne"...a fantastic little pop creation that just evokes the good-timey, happy hippie, upbeat vibe of the era so well.
Side Note: I don't think this band's reputation ever recovered from the skewering it got back in the mid-80's in "Vernon Joynson"'s "Acid Trip" Or "Acid Archives" Psychedelic Music Guides, which were Psych/60's fans bibles back then. The band ain't brilliant, but not really that bad either, just erratic...and certainly redeemed for me by tracks like "Groovy Towne" here, "Cool It" from thier next LP and (..especially) the full on Psych non-Lp 45 "B" side "E.S.P.", which is absolutely worth hearing if your a fan of the era.
