The house renovation in Argentina is finally back on track and the big update is that the 80-year-old roof has finally come off! This was much needed as we had A LOT of water coming in in multiple areas of the house. We're redoing both the roof and the ceiling and have opted for a wood ceiling (exposed beams and tongue and groove style in pine) with a metal roof. This home renovation is also giving us the chance to add roof insulation which is something that this house did not have - and let me tell you, it is needed because it can get cold up in the Sierras! In this renovation vlog, we'll be sharing a day-by-day chronicle of what's been unfolding on the property.

🔥 Chalet Roof Replacement: Day 1 → 2 ½ Weeks of Progress 🔥

We finally tore off the decades-old roof on our family’s 80-year-old mountain chalet—and things got messy fast! Here’s what happened, step by step:

Scaffolding & Tile Removal

Crew arrived late afternoon to set up scaffolding.

Early next day: half the old tiles came off in hours—such relief after a long search for the right roofer!

At least the project has momentum again.

👀 First Look—Roof Off!

Stepped inside to find bright sunlight flooding rooms that were once dank and dark.

No more shingles or ceiling boards (“machimbre”)—it feels like a Jesuit ruin, but it’s actually rebirth.

Ant, wasp and bee nests revealed: remind us why we needed to replace everything.

🌳 Salvaging Hardwood Beams

Discovered tropical hardwood beams from Misiones (no longer commercially available!).

Plan to reuse them as a covered outdoor gallery or wooden deck—nothing wasted.

🐜 Day 3: Pest Control Run

Ant bites and feisty wasps halted work—so we trekked to the local “pulpería” for spray.

Smoke and Raid in hand, the crew bored on through.

🔨 Scaffolding Views & Landscape Reveal

Up on the scaffolding: all fiber-cement tiles removed, inner ceiling exposed in kitchen & living area.

Sam’s landscaping cleared steep orchards below, finally revealing that beautiful mountain drop-off.

📦 More Debris & “Surprises”

Pulled old beams, machimbre boards and even dried mice out of hidden corners—proof that the house had lived many lives.

Piled rubble and historic treasures alike, while protecting our little peach tree from the mess.

🏡 Day 4: Ceiling Off & New Wood Delivery

Entire roof and ceiling now gone—even over the foyer and kitchen. Only the bathroom remains (wasp “safe zone”).

Delivered pre-treated pine beams: first insecticide, then a satin-finish varnish—no gloss, no matt.

Crew prepping for central beam installation next week.

☔ Rain Delays & Flooded Floors

Two days of heavy rain left the interior with kitchen puddles—we’re scrambling to pump out water and protect valuables.

Realized our original parquet flooring must come up for proper waterproofing. Farewell, vintage wood?

🧱 Walls & Materials on the Way

Sections of brick wall still need rebuild after water damage and beam removal.

Ordered sand and mortar—delivery day means stubbing and replastering soon.

💪 Weekend Warriors

These roofers show up 7 AM–5 PM, Saturdays and Sundays—some driving an hour just to be here.

Highest praise for their punctuality, work ethic, and honest rates.

✨ What’s Next?

Complete beam installations and roofing tiles over the next two weeks.

Rebuild walls, install under-roof insulation, and protect floors.

Landscape cleanup continues as we reclaim every sunlit corner of this seven-hectare family estate.
