While our camper van is a fully-featured van conversion that includes a traditional plumbed-in toilet, we found ourselves gravitating towards a much simpler solution. Why? Two words: RV dump station. Anyone who has experienced RV life knows the hassle of dealing with a black water tank, the messy pipes, and the constant search for a place to empty it. It’s a chore we decided we could live without.
Our solution is the humble but brilliant Luggable Loo, which is essentially a bucket toilet. It’s a sturdy 5-gallon bucket fitted with a proper toilet seat and lined with a heavy-duty bag. As you can see, the process is incredibly simple. Instead of dealing with plumbing and chemicals, we can simply tie up the bag and dispose of it in a regular trash receptacle. This system is a game-changer for boondocking and off-grid living, giving us the freedom to camp anywhere without worrying about our tank capacity.
For us, this choice is about maximizing our time for adventure. We'd rather spend our days enjoying the incredible Alaska travel experiences than searching for a dump station. This simple RV hack proves that sometimes the lowest-tech solution is the most effective. It's a more convenient, less "gross," and surprisingly liberating way to handle business on the road. This is one of our favorite van life tips for anyone building a DIY camper or looking to simplify their current setup.
