freesoulJAH: A Retrospective - Exhibit 2: P. Diddy You Suck (We Know How to Jam) - ca. 2002

This was a diss track directed at Sean ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs. This song was recorded by my brother Simon and I, calling ourselves rainBOWstory at the time. This was our first actual album, recorded in a way that we could have multiple tracks and edit our music, rather than just recording live jams on cassette tapes. Bad boy was dominating the airwaves with shiny pop hip hop and we despised it. We also blamed him for Tupac’s death and felt like he didn’t have any redeeming quality other than his association with Biggie.

We recorded this using the direct 1/8 inch audio input into a PC, using Cakewalk as our DAW. I wrote the lyrics and sang, Simon wrote and played the guitars, and we teamed up on the other parts of production. This was from an album called ‘Krazy Rodeo’ which we burned copies of to give to friends and family. We might have posted it on a website or two, but the internet was nothing like it is these days. It was fun to make and felt like an accomplishment to be able to say that we recorded an album.


Krazy Rodeo was recorded during 2002 in Las Vegas, NV. I have since eased up on my criticism of Puffy, although I still believe that he took away some of the edge that hip hop had at the time. This song is a little silly in retrospect, but that is where we were at the time.

Simon is currently experimenting with and producing a series called ‘Slaggy Dude’ among other artistic endeavors. .
