record for the longest time spent lost at sea.
Alvarenga, a skilled fisherman from Mexico, went on a fishing trip with his friend, Ezekiel
Cordoba. They got caught in a storm that drove them far from the coast.
Their small boat, not prepared for a long journey, had few supplies. They had to catch birds and
turtles for food and collect rainwater to drink.
Cordoba lost hope and died, leaving Alvarenga alone in the vast ocean.
Alvarenga was rescued near the Marshall Islands after drifting over 11,000 kilometers. When he
returned, he faced legal troubles because people accused him of eating his companion to
survive.
