Bob Ebeling 'Nobody's Home' Instrumental Version
c & p 2023 Flowers On Fire A.S.C.A.P.
I grew up on the same street as this house, Chandler Street, in Romeo, MI. I was 6 years old in 1976 when we moved in to our brand new house up the street. At that time this infamous house down the street was called the 'Haven Farm' and was a home for extremely mentally and physically handicapped people. It stayed in this form for a few more years before that operation was abandoned.
Among the stronger memories are these;
There was one patient who 'got loose' and ran up the street with some white coated types chasing after him to take him back. I don't think he was trying to escape, more just running free for a few. This happened often.
There was another patient who would stand on the sidewalk in front of the house and make poly-rhythmic sounds with his mouth. I thought they sounded pretty complex and cool and would try to talk to him and tell him so. But he did not seem to notice I was there, right in front of him on my bike. He never acknowledged me.
This building had a very dark energy. Specific areas of the house and campus radiated dark energy at me, especially being 6 to 9 years old.
Some of the employees invited a few of us kids to play outside around back in the summer. I did not take them up on their offer. In back of the house there was some very heavy darkness. There was a cottage where employees stayed, a large barn North of that, and there were some medical looking back doors that had scary connotations in my young imagination. This whole back area of the house seemed to be the darkest part.
In or around 1977 or 8, my Aunt Maryann, in line with a church type of field trip, took me and some classmates from bible school to visit the 'Haven Farm' operation-- right through the front door with an official purpose-- to witness.
I remember it smelled very bad. Like feces and vomit. There were 2 or 3 patients in wheelchairs, none seemed very aware, very extreme physical and mental issues. There were some employees standing around and a few trying to feed some patients. The food was not easy to feed them it seemed.
There were a few less extremely handicapped patients who were shuffled over to meet us. These were some heavy cases of extremely mentally handicapped people but I think a few of them formed a pleasant hello of sorts. I remember not staying very long as the smell was overwhelming.

Around 1982 to 4 a family moved in to this house. They were Eastern European and very strange and they worked on vintage cars-- like Rolls Royces and MG's. One of the three sons was Brian, we became friends and I played several times in the third or fourth story attic. We played basketball in the wintertime up there. The house was freezing cold and and the family were all staying in one general living area around the back, this room had a wood burning stove. The house had no heat.
His Dad seemed very mean. His Mom seemed to be there sometimes. He told me he had several older sisters who lived elsewhere. He was a fun kid and seemed quite normal for living in such a strange house and family situation.
I lost track of him by the late 80s.

Enjoy,
Bob Ebeling
