BMW has introduced the all-new 4 Series. The 4 Series is the 2-door model based on the 3 Series platform.
First things first. What do you think of this new grille. A bit smaller than the grille shown on the concept but certainly a huge kidney grille that will certainly bring sharp comments. It’s the Miss Piggy of cars!
The rest of the car looks good but bigger. The last 4- Series had already grown too big for some buyers, that’s why the 2 Series is such a great car. Compared to the 3 Series Sedan, the new 4 Series Coupé is 66 mm longer, 25 mm wider, 25 mm lower and with a 25 mm wider rear track while sharing the same platform and wheelbase.
Compared to the previous generation 4 Series Coupé , the new 4 Series is 132 mm longer, 25 mm wider, 10 mm taller and features a 40 mm longer wheelbase and 35 mm wider front and 30 mm wider rear tracks. So bigger.
The new 4 Series comes with standard LED headlamps. The long hood and seeing lines down the side are reminiscent of the last generation A5 in ways. the rear has slim, L-shaped LED tail lights , plus trapezoidal exhaust finishers are integrated into the lower rear bumper cover. The standard M Sport Package includes a uniquely styled front bumper with larger air intake
The inside gets standard power sport seats, The extra length of the car will certainly help rear passenger room. The dash is what we have come to expect from BMW, nothing revolutionary here, which is good and bad. Yes, BMW uses some fantastic materials and the dash is familiar to existing buyers but compared to other brands, this is a rather safe and conservative interior compared to many who have gone with the all- screen interior look. Some good news for Android Users, BMW finally has included Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay as standard equipment. Adding Android is a great step and the subscription based model for Apple has been dropped.
Power is up in horsepower and torque over the previous models . The new 430i xDrive is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 255 hp , an increase of 7 hp and 294 ft-lbs. of torque ,an increase of 36 ft-lbs. The 430i accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. The new M440i is powered by a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder 382 hp, an increase of 62 hp and 369 ft-lbs, an increase of 39 ft.-lbs. The M440i xDrive Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds Both 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines use a single, twin-scroll turbocharger. Both the 430i and M440i come standard with X-Drive for the Canadian market and power goes through an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. This new BMW still runs on run-flat tires
The M440i xDrive Coupé gets a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The 48-volt starter/generator unit powers a separate 48-volt battery which also allows for energy recuperation, storage and use during driving. This energy can be used by the starter/generator unit to boost performance by up to 11 hp during hard acceleration. The Auto Start/Stop function can now turn off the engine while the driver is braking for a stop as soon as the speed drops below 15 km/h.
So that’s a quick look at the all new BMW 4 Seies. All of the discussion will be about the oversized front grille. Do you like it? Will this help or hinder sales? Is this a play for the largest market, China? Let me know what you think. No timeline on the delivery dates but this is a 2021 model so it gives BMW flexibility due to Covid etc.
