In Bhagavad Gita 2.22, Lord Krishna uses a simple yet powerful example to explain the cycle of life and death. Just as a person removes worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, the soul (Atman) sheds an old, worn-out body and moves into a new one.
Reference:-
Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 2, Verse 22
Speaker: Lord Krishna to Arjuna
Theme: Transmigration of the soul (Rebirth), Detachment from the physical body.
Death is not the end — it’s merely a transition. The body is temporary and perishable, but the soul is eternal and indestructible. Once we truly understand this, fear of death and excessive attachment to the physical world begin to fade, and we develop strength, calmness, and a deeper understanding of life’s flow.
This knowledge offers comfort in times of loss and helps us focus on the essence of life rather than its outer form.
Original Sanskrit Shloka — Bhagavad Gita 2.22:
वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय
नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि।
तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णा-
न्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही।।
Translation (English):-
"Just as a person discards old clothes and puts on new ones,
so too the embodied soul discards old, worn-out bodies and takes on new ones."
Hindi Translation:-
"जिस प्रकार मनुष्य पुराने वस्त्रों को त्यागकर नये वस्त्र धारण करता है, उसी प्रकार आत्मा पुराने और जीर्ण-शीर्ण शरीरों को त्यागकर नए शरीर धारण करती है।"
