Leader of the National Union for Democracy and Progress (UNDP), Bello Bouba Maigari, announced his presidential candidacy during a congress in Yaounde on Saturday, shifting away from long-term ally of President Paul Biya ahead of Cameroon's October election.
Footage shows UNDP supporters listening to speeches and chanting inside the auditorium before exiting the hall. Meanwhile, volunteers can be seen offering the party's merchandise to supporters.
"The governing body of our party, which is the Central Committee, has met. They have decided that this time around, our party should participate in the next presidential election with our own candidate and have asked me to be that candidate, I accepted," Maigari declared.
"Political parties are free to participate in all elections either by educating their compatriots or their militants, or by participating in each election with their candidates. This is what the UNDP has always done since the return of a multi-party system in our country," he added.
The decision comes four months before the presidential election and just days after the Front for the National Salvation of Cameroon (FNSC) party leader, Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, resigned from the government and declared his own candidacy.
The Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) is now losing a key northern ally with considerable regional influence - a development that could carry major electoral consequences in the upcoming election.
