Disco Music is most commonly associated with the 1970s. While it is true Disco had its biggest mainstream success between the years of 1975 and 1979, the genre was very much alive and well throughout most of the 1980s. 1979 saw a major rebellion against the popularity of Disco with the rise of the "Disco Sucks" movement which turned out to be less about music preference and more about homophobia, racism and sexism.

Disco in the 1980s was rebranded with many other names including Urban Dance Music, Club Music, Freestyle and Hi-Energy though at the core the songs were very similar to their 1970s predecessors. As the decade came to a close, Disco experienced a massive resurgence in the Hip-Hop and House Music communities as artists started to use samples to create new compositions.
