Retro Release: 44 years ago today—on August 24, 1981—The Rolling Stones released Tattoo You, produced under the band’s long-time credit The Glimmer Twins.

Mostly assembled from studio outtakes recorded throughout the 1970s, Tattoo You polished older material into a cohesive, stadium-ready album—the sessions were completed with fresh overdubs and mixes before release.

A dark, driving record that yielded some of the band’s most recognisable late-period cuts—hear it on the propulsive riff of “Start Me Up,” the mellow, sax-tinged “Waiting On A Friend,” and the punchy social jab “Hang Fire.”

Commercially it was a major success: Tattoo You reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 (the album spent multiple weeks atop the chart) and reached No. 2 in the UK; the lead single “Start Me Up” became a global hit and helped drive sales, with the album later certified multi-platinum in the US.
