Matala or Μάταλα (2024) is a small town and 75 km south of Heraklion on the island of Crete in Greece. Matala is famous for its caves which were made by the first humans on the island in the Neolithic Age. During the Minoan Period Matala was the main port for the city of Phaestos and later during the Roman Era it was the main port for Gortyna. Roman General Brutus frequently visited Matala and one of the caves is named after him "Brutospeliana" (=cave of Brutus). According to legend this cave was used by the Roman General. The port of Matala was one of the most important sea routes in the south of the island of Crete to North Africa and Asia. In the 1960's Matala was occupied by a hippie community who lived inside the caves. Important musicians lived in Matala like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens and Georg Danzer. Nowadays Matala is a popular tourist destination.
