Volume 3 - Ellis Dee on Sunrise FM
The third installment of the archives is a 1990 radio show from Sunrise FM (88.75fm), a pirate radio station that started in the late 1980's broadcasting out from East London. This tape is a classic example of pirate radio from back in the day and contains the usual chat, adverts, shout outs and call ins that you would expect. I used to regularly listen to Ellis Dee and the Rat Pack on Sunrise FM, as it was one of the least fuzzy pirate stations that I could receive on my battery powered ghetto-blaster in South London.
This show epitomizes the vibes during that wonderful time and contains a fine blend of acid house, techno, rave & break-beat before the scene split up into its various sub cultures. This is one of my earliest recordings and features tracks by legendary break-beat producers such as Shut Up & Dance, 4 Hero & the Scientist, as well as classic techno sounds from N-Joi, B-Sides & Nitrous.
Pirate radio was instrumental in getting out fresh new underground music to the masses, as well as providing information on the places you can go out to dance to it. I remember my Mum watching Top of the Pops in the front room, whilst I was grooving to the sounds of Ellis Dee in my bedroom planning my next weekends raving debauchery! :-)
