Formed in 1987 as Alsace Lorraine, the duo of Sandi Saraya and Gregg Munier initially sought fame in Los Angeles before returning to New Jersey to focus on songwriting. The band's lineup expanded with the addition of Rey, Taylor, and Bonfante later that year.
Saraya's self-titled debut album, released in 1989 on PolyGram Records, showcased their energetic rock sound. Despite label efforts to position Sandi Saraya as a sex symbol, the band's music took center stage. Their hit single "Love Has Taken Its Toll" reached number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100, propelling the album to a 39-week run on the Billboard 200. Follow-up single "Back to the Bullet" also charted, while the ballad "Timeless Love" became their third and final Hot 100 entry.
Following the success of their debut, Saraya underwent lineup changes with Barry Dunaway replacing Gary Taylor on bass. Keyboardist Gregg Munier departed after contributing to the second album, "When the Blackbird Sings," due to creative differences, and was replaced by guitarist John Roggio.
