Japanese artist Yoshiki Uchida creates eye catching sculptures using Kanamono. His work, shown at the Agora Gallery in New York, is a true contrast, creating organic creatures using the inorganic metals of Kanamono. Translated Kanamono means decorative metal fittings and includes forty-eight types of objects such as screws, kugi or drills, drivers and pliers. Uchida uses these types of hardware and fittings to create large puzzles like sculptures often of animals or scenes of nature. Each piece of hardware is artfully arraigned often accidentally to create the full piece. At first glance things may appear one way, though when viewed up close they are likely something completely different. With his work Uchida aims to create a world of wonder and hopes that the viewer is filled with interest and excitement.
As a child Uchida spent time roaming his father’s hardware company and playing in rivers. With his love of animals, it is easy to see where much of his inspiration comes from. His art is a balance between modern technology and the commitment of Japanese craftsmen, and though the craftsmen trade is declining, Uchida is proud to represent the tradition.
